Shellfish Recalled Over Norovirus Risk in Pacific NorthwestThe FDA recalled oysters and clams from Washington state after several people got sick from norovirus. The shellfish came from Drayton Harbor near the Canadian border. Manila clams harvested by the Lummi Indian Business Council were shipped to stores in Washington, Oregon, California and six other states between February 13 and March 3. Raw oysters from Drayton Harbor Oyster Company were sold in Washington. Norovirus causes vomiting, nausea, stomach pain and diarrhea. Symptoms usually start 12-48 hours after eating contaminated food and most people feel better in 1-3 days. The illness can be worse for people with weak immune systems. Washington state has closed all shellfish harvesting in Drayton Harbor until at least March 24. The Lummi Nation takes shellfish safety seriously since harvesting is important for their economy and culture. Most of their shellfish come from the Lummi Reservation, not Drayton Harbor. Companies quickly stopped selling the contaminated shellfish when reports came in.
New Fish Helps Small Farmers Fight Hunger and Climate ChangeScientists created a special type of tilapia fish called GIFT that helps small farmers around the world. This improved fish grows 30% faster than regular tilapia and can survive in tough conditions like drought and disease. The fish provides important nutrients like protein, iron, zinc, and Vitamin A that help children grow healthy and prevent diseases like blindness. Small farmers can make more money selling these fish because they're affordable, nutritious, and taste good. The fish also helps fight climate change because they turn feed into protein very efficiently. As the world needs 40% more fish by 2030 to feed everyone, GIFT tilapia is being used in over 17 countries to help end hunger and malnutrition. This program has been working for over 30 years to help communities facing poverty get better nutrition and income from fish farming.
Global Food Research Shows New Ways to Fight Hunger and Climate ChangeCGIAR is a worldwide research group that helps farmers grow better food while protecting the environment. Their latest innovations include smart farming tools for Africa that help farmers use machines in ways that don't hurt the planet. They're also finding the best cacao (chocolate) producers and studying how organizations in the Amazon rainforest work together to protect nature. Other research looks at how droughts hurt communities that move with their animals to find food and water, and how different crops like legumes can make our food system stronger. These scientists are creating new plant varieties, better farming methods, and digital tools to help farmers around the world grow more food while dealing with climate change. Their work helps millions of farmers feed their families and communities better.
College Program Fights Student Hunger With Food PantriesNC Campus Engagement runs a program to help college students who don't have enough food. Since 2010, they've partnered with Food Lion grocery stores to fight hunger on college campuses across North Carolina. Their main program is the NC Collegiate Hunger Challenge, where colleges compete to raise awareness about student food insecurity and collect food donations. Schools pick student ambassadors who lead events and food drives on campus. Winners get cash prizes up to $10,000 to support their campus food pantries. The program also gives grants to help schools start or expand food pantries. Over 30 colleges have participated, including community colleges, state universities, and private schools. Students get stipends for their work, and schools receive money for activities and marketing materials. Applications open in spring for the fall challenge, and separate grants are available for schools that don't participate in the main competition. The program has helped establish food pantries and gardens on campuses to ensure students have access to nutritious food while pursuing their education.
