The Mathews Center offers two programs to help college students and recent graduates learn about civic engagement and community leadership. The Jean O'Connor-Snyder Internship Program (JOIP) gives college students hands-on experience working in Alabama communities for several weeks or a full year. The McKenzie Civic Fellows Program is a year-long service program for recent college graduates to learn about democratic practices and help strengthen civic life across Alabama's 67 counties. Both programs help young people develop skills in community collaboration and communication while working on real projects that benefit local communities.
“Perhaps all the dragons in our lives are princesses who are only waiting to see us act, just once, with beauty and courage. Perhaps everything that frightens us is, in its deepest essence, something helpless that wants our love. ”
— Rainer Maria Rilke
