researchStudy: New Nuclear Weapon May Not Help US Defense MuchNew America think tank studied a new nuclear weapon called SLCM-N that the US wants to put on submarines. The weapon won't be ready until the 2030s. Researchers used expert interviews and future planning to see if this weapon would help protect America. They looked at four different ways the future might look in the 2030s. The study found that this nuclear weapon probably won't make a big difference in keeping America safe. Its value depends more on what happens in the future than on the weapon itself. The weapon might help a little in some situations, but it's not a magic solution. How other countries see America's intentions and how technology changes will matter more than having this weapon. The researchers say disagreements about the weapon come from different ideas about how future conflicts might happen, not from missing facts about the weapon itself.
